“Imagine” MEDS, Dessau

In February, 2025, a group of students from Anhalt University of Applied Sciences put together an event called “Imagine” to connect the local design community living in Dessau, Germany, and collaborate with the international Design Community of MEDS Network.

Dessau-Roßlau is an independent city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. The city is the third largest city after Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg and one of three major centres in the state.

Proximity

Lying only 126km away from Berlin, and 52km from Leipzig, Dessau becomes really accessible to international crowds with 1 direct train away from multiple airports in nearby cities.

Past

Historically, Dessau was the capital and residence of the principality and later duchy of Anhalt-Dessau and, until November 1918, of the duchy of Anhalt, which were ruled by the Ascanians. The Bauhaus Dessau and the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Present

With the presence of the Architecture and design Departments in the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. Dessau has a rich young community of both locals and internationals that together they create a strong bound community that has a plethora of events and activities to offer for the local community of Dessau as well as for the students of the university

MED Gallery Dessau

The team of MEDS Dessau put together a collection of Posters showcasing diverse projects from previous MEDS Workshops, as well as a booklet that encompasses all the Gallery exhibits that the visitor can take along for further reference.

The event took place on 2 different occasions:

DDS (Dessau Design Schau)

Thanks to the university, MEDS Gallery had its own exhibition space with the Dessau Design Schau, which is the end of semester exhibition for all the design students at the university. The university sponsored the printed media by providing a budget for printing for the event in the university’s own printing workspace

Over 100 local students had their first interaction with the MEDS Workshop, and they had direct information about the coming workshop, MEDS Rijeka. Moreover, the application for the 2 mini-workshops organized by the MEDS Gallery team was open for all the exhibition visitors.

PlusPunkt

PlusPunkt was initially a design proposal from the local architecture students, which, like many student spaces in Dessa, was funded and realized by the state to provide activity spaces for the local student and young community of Dessau.

In collaboration of the designers/students who runs PLusPunkt, MEDs Gallery was able to continue it’s impact on the local community further by creating more intersections between MEDS Network and Dessau Designers.

Vacuum Forming Workshop

Tutor: Nilz

Participants: Mario, Oscar, Iulia, Berk, etc.

“For the workshop we want to miniaturise this process. Participants will get to make their own custom moulds out of a variety of materials and vacuum form a 10x10 cm imprint of their mould. Placing our logo in one corner the finished pieces will be memorable keepsakes for the participants as both - mould and vacuum formed piece - can be taken home and shown to family and friends. We intend to hold this workshop two times for up to 20 participants and a duration of 3 hours. “

Experimental Phone Photography

Tutors: Aaron, Jona

Participants: Berk, Ahmet, Cuygun, etc.

“In this short, hands-on workshop, we will discover the basics of image composition - using nothing but our cell phones! Through small tasks, we will learn how composition, light and perspective influence our photos. We then print out our photos in black and white and create a small mini-exhibition. We will discuss the pictures together and sharpen our eye for exciting motifs. No previous experience necessary - just curiosity and your smartphone!”

Stura

Thanks to the university Stura, all workshop expenses were covered, and all the workshops were free of charge for all the participants

Celebrating Collaboration

What better way to end this event than playing music together with the community.

CityJam.Dessau

One of the many student initiatives in Dessau, CityJam was founded by 2 students who started playing music in the corridor of their house, and slowly grew into a community of Jammers, touring the city every month and creating amazing atmospheres for people to get together and play music in an open and free improvisational space.

Dither Down

What better way to end this event with a massive line up of 2 DJs form MEDs Network, and 4 DJs from the Local Community of Dessau

promised to make us time travel; Nouna has the egyptian Habibti element mixed with latino and hip hop flavor; Jonas&Niklas will make us move on Jersey Club and Brazilian Funk.

Our mission in Dessau is done, for now….

Now that we have introduced ourselves, we hope to see the friendly faces we met during our visit to Dessau in the coming Workshop, MEDS Rijeka

Not only that, the discussion was always open about the possibility of bringing MEDS Workshop to Dessau in 2026. So far, we have been taking the process one step at a time.

Maybe it’s already time to plan our next visit to see what the future of our proposed ideas
